The study of pollen in sedimentary deposits has been one of the primary sources of information on continental paleoenvironments and will undoubtedly be one of the predominant proxy climate indicators in the reconstruction of Arctic paleoenvironmental conditions.
This project will refine and further test techniques for the extraction of pollen from sedimentary deposits for dating by radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry. These extraction techniques have recently been shown to be effective in isolating pollen from contaminants that are probably responsible for significant inconsistencies and uncertainties in sediment dates obtained by the traditional method of 14C radioactive decay dating of bulk sediment samples.
The development of improved pollen extraction and radiocarbon dating techniques will greatly facilitate the preparation and dating of samples of interest to the general palynology and paleoecology research communities.
Radiocarbon Dating of Pollen by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry - Volume 32 Issue 2 - Thomas A. Brown, D. Erle Nelson, Rolf W. Mathewes, John S. Vogel. A good reference for pollen extraction is the work by Brown et al. (): Radiocarbon Dating of Pollen by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. Quaternary Research. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the radiocarbon dating of pollen concentrate samples by accelerator mass spectrometry. The dates obtained by this.

About Awards. We will need about mg of extracted pollen free from any sediment material.
A good reference for pollen extraction is the work by Brown et al. Quaternary Research When enough sample is available, a small portion will be tested to ensure neutrality.
If the extract is acidic, it will be rinsed with de-ionized water to achieve a neutral pH level. However, loss of sample mass may occur during this process.
We present a simple method for manually separating pollen concentrates for radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating using a mouth pipetting . Radiocarbon dating of pollen by accelerator mass spectrometry. Authors: Brown, Thomas A.; Nelson, D. Erle; Mathewes, Rolf W.; Vogel, John S.; Southon, John. This project will refine and further test techniques for the extraction of pollen from sedimentary deposits for dating by radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry.
It can be dried in the laboratory. However, if you want to dry the sample do not use acetone or methanol as this could lead to falsely old results.
RADIOCARBON AMS DATING OF POLLEN EXTRACTED FROM PEAT SAMPLES Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) has decreased the sample size. Pollen dates from lake sediments associated with Mazama Ash were consistent reliable radiocarbon dates from pollen using accelerator mass spectrometry. In this study. we demonstrate for the first time the radiocarbon dating of pollen concentrate samples by accelerator mass spectrometry. The dates obtained by this.
Recommended Packaging — You can use plastic snap cap microcentrifuge tubes 1. Place the tubes in separate labeled Ziplock bags during transport. We also recommend sending your samples in small boxes whenever possible instead of using envelopes to protect the physical integrity of the samples during shipment.Carbon Dating for Kids: Making a Mass Spectrometer with a Blow Dryer
The equipment used by postal services typically run envelopes through rollers during the automated sorting process. The laboratory typically needs mg of extracted pollen approximate dry weight for dating depending on carbon content. It is important to ensure that all of the carbonates CaCO3 have been completely removed so there is no further mass reduction prior to combustion of the sample.
In such cases, the lab will ask you to decide whether to proceed or cancel the analysis. Would you like us to track your package?
